The World Pickleball League (WPBL), India’s first franchise-based pickleball league, is scheduled to debut on January 24, 2025, making history.
The WPBL, which was organized by former Indian tennis players and Arjuna Awardees Gaurav Natekar and Arati Ponnappa Natekar, has the potential to completely transform pickleball in the nation.
Pickleball is rapidly becoming more and more popular in India, and the WPBL is the next important step for the sport. In 2024 alone, more than 50,000 Indians took up pickleball, helped along by the building of about 1,000 courts nationwide. The WPBL wants to expand the sport’s reach even further by fostering a fan-friendly environment through intense competition and grassroots growth.
Six city teams—Dilli Dillwale, Pune United, Mumbai Pickle Power, Bengaluru Jawans, Chennai Super Champs, and Hyderabad Superstars—will compete in the competition. 48 elite athletes from 14 nations will compete for gold in 18 games, making the WPBL an international event.
In addition to worldwide sensations like William Sobek, Willy Ching, and Max Freeman, Indian celebrities like Vrushali Thakare, Mayur Patil, and Isha Lakhani will demonstrate their international experience.
The WPBL has teamed up with the International Pickleball Federation (IPF) and the All-India Pickleball Association (AIPA) to support grassroots competitions in franchise cities in addition to the competitive activity. This initiative demonstrates the league’s goal of developing regional talent and creating a thriving pickleball community.
