Women’s Football At The Paris Olympics: Brazil Defeats Spain 4–2 To Advance To The Final Against The US

Brazil, who defeated world champion Spain 4–2, will play the United States in the Olympic women’s soccer final.

Irene Paredes’ own goal gave the two-time silver medallist an early lead, but Gabi Portilho and Adriana scored at Stade de Marseille.

Marta, 38, has declared that her sixth Olympics will be her final major competition with the national team.

Spain will not have the opportunity in Paris to solidify its position as the leading team in women’s soccer by adding Olympic gold to the World Cup title it won the previous year.

Brazil took the lead thanks to an own goal by Paredes in the sixth minute, and in first-half stoppage time in the fourth minute, Portilho increased the lead.

Brazil’s supremacy was highlighted by Adriana’s header in the 71st.

After Alexia Putellas’ header gave Spain a goal back in the 85th minute, Salma Paralluelo almost immediately struck the crossbar with a shot from outside the box.

Before Paralluelo scored her second goal in the twelfth minute of stoppage time, Kerolin made it 4-1 in the opening minute by blasting through Coll’s legs. But by then, Spain was unable to stage a successful resurgence.

The U.S. women’s national team, who have won four titles, will face Brazil in the final on Saturday at Paris’s Parc des Princes.

Spain plays Germany in Lyon for bronze.
