Avinash Sable and Kishore Jena, two athletes from India headed to the Olympics, will compete in the Paris Diamond League 2024 on Sunday at the Charlety Stadium. India will watch the event on television and via live streaming.
Kishore Jena, a javelin thrower, will compete in his second Diamond League tournament of the year in Doha in May. In his lone Diamond League outing, the silver medallist from the Asian Games threw 76.31 meters, good for ninth place.
Avinash Sable, the winner of the Asian Games, will compete in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. He will be making his Diamond League debut this year.
Jena is competing in the Paris Diamond League among a stellar field of javelin competitors that includes two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, three-time Diamond League champion Jakub Vadlejch of Czechia, and Commonwealth Games champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan.
Jena scored a season-best 80.84 meters to finish third at the Inter-state championships in Panchkula last month, after placing fifth at the Federation Cup in India with 75.49 meters.
With his winning throw of 87.54 meters at the Asian Games last year, Kishore Jena had guaranteed himself a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Neeraj Chopra, the current Olympic champion, will not be competing in the Paris Diamond League. Chopra defeated Jena in the Asian Games final in Hangzhou to earn gold.
Avinash Sable, meanwhile, started the season off with a time of 8:21.85, placing him in second place at the Portland Track Festival in Orlando, USA. With a time of 8:31.75, he won the Inter-state in Panchkula last month.
At the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022, Avinash Sable broke the national record with a time of 8:11.20 to win the silver medal. In four Diamond League events the previous year, Sable best placed sixth.
World Athletics hosts an annual series of elite track and field events known as the Diamond League. The eighth leg of the Diamond League 2024 series will take place in Paris.
The top athletes in each event advance to the finals, and points are awarded to competitors depending on their performance in each Diamond League leg.
The Diamond League trophy is awarded to the victor of each event in the finals. The finals of this year will take place in September in Brussels, Belgium.
