The victor of Group B was supposed to play the second-place nation in Sydney in the quarterfinal draw, but that would not take place. The regulations provide that prior to the competition’s finals, no teams in second place may play against the team that won their group.
In the last Group B encounter, Poland, the victor of the group, played Czechia on Wednesday. This means that these two nations will not be able to meet in the quarterfinals.
The winner of the lowest-ranked group from the designated city will switch places with the runner-up team. In this scenario, Czechia will face Italy, the winner of Group D, and switch places with Great Britain, the winner of Group F. Poland will compete with Great Britain.
Italy had previously advanced to the quarterfinals by winning Group D. They were runners-up to the United States in the first-ever season-opening mixed teams competition two years ago, and they have already won the last two Davis Cups. Even without the participation of world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, Italy managed to win their group.
From Thursday to the final on Sunday, every tournament match will take place in Sydney.
