Swiss Open: Matteo Berrettini And Stefanos Tsitsipas Set Up A Semi-Final Showdown

Following his straight-set victory over Fabio Fognini on Friday, Stefanos Tsitsipas will take on Matteo Berrettini in the Swiss Open semifinals.

On Roy Emerson Court, the two-time major finalist—who is playing in Gstaad for the first time—took 66 minutes to defeat the Italian 6-4 6-3.

Even though he gave up an early break in the first set, Tsitsipas won a critical one at 5-4 to take the lead.

The Greek earned another early break in the second set, but it was wiped out, and he eventually made it to the final four with ease.

“My returns worked pretty well, I was very consistent with them,” he said. “I insisted on staying back throughout the match and giving it a bit of a loop, trying to get the angles from the very beginning. It worked pretty well.

“I’m happy with how I started serving towards the end of the match. In the beginning, I was still trying to figure out how I was going to open up the court and create opportunities on my serve. It took me a while to figure out. I unlocked the code towards the end.”

Tsitsipas of Berrettini, who defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-2) is expected to be greeted by another Italian.

The former Wimbledon finalist is going for his second clay-court championship of the year after winning in Marrakech and finishing second to Jack Draper in Stuttgart the previous month.

Data Debrief: Tsitsipas does a great job again in Italy

The reigning Monte-Carlo Masters champion Tsitsipas won his sixth straight match against Fognini and advanced to his fourth ATP semifinal of the year, three of which were on clay.

On the surface, the Greek has an amazing 14-1 record versus Italian opponents; his only loss came four years ago in Rome against Jannik Sinner.
