Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich pulled off a last-minute equalizer against Celtic on Tuesday to secure a 1-1 draw and move on to the Champions League Round of 16 with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
Depending on Friday’s draw, they will either play Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen next.
After Nicolas Kuehn, a former Bayern reserve player, gave the visitors an unexpected lead in the 63rd minute, Davies scored in stoppage time as they attempted to overcome a first-leg deficit and win their first game in Germany in 16 tries.
With a daring effort that put the home team on the defensive for the majority of the match, Celtic, who had lost the first leg 2-1 in Glasgow, came dangerously close to requiring extra time.
Raphael Guerreiro cleared Celtic’s Kuehn’s shot on goal in the 16th minute, and Daizen Maeda just missed connecting with an Arne Engels cross in front of goal a moment later, as the Bavarians were forced to work from the beginning.
Shortly after the restart, Bayern came very near again when Goretzka was unable to defeat goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel in a one-on-one match.
But Kuehn chipped home after two defensive blunders to give Brendan Rodgers’ team the lead, and Celtic broke the tie with a well-earned goal.
Before Schmeichel made yet another incredible stop to deny Joshua Kimmich, Bayern increased the tempo and had close chances with Goretzka and Leroy Sane.
Despite their best efforts, the Danethen were unable to stop Goretzka’s attempt in front of goal in stoppage time. Davies then shoved the rebounded equalizer over the line, sending the Germans to the knockout stage.
