Rohit Sharma broke MS Dhoni’s record for the most T20I victories in a calendar year following the victory on Wednesday (September 28). After Rohit took over as captain from Virat Kohli last year, India had won 16 of its first 21 games in 2022.
After losing the opening game of the three-game series against Australia, Rohit Sharma and Team India won their third straight T20I match. India now leads the three-match series against South Africa 1-0 after winning the series against Australia 2-1 on Sunday. As he broke yet another enormous record set by former captain MS Dhoni, skipper Rohit is getting stronger and stronger.
Rohit Sharma overtook Virat Kohli as the second-most successful Indian captain in T20I cricket on Sunday (September 25). Rohit broke Dhoni’s record for the most T20I victories in a calendar year following the victory on Wednesday, September 28. Since Rohit took over as captain from Kohli the previous year, India has won 16 of their 21 games.
Eight straight victories by Rohit over the West Indies, Sri Lanka, and England between February and July 2022 totaled eight victories. After that, he defeated the West Indies in four games played in the Caribbean, winning three of them.
Whether it was a bilateral, triangular, or multination series, Rohit had won every one he had participated in as the Indian captain. However, his record was broken when India disappointed in the 2022 Asia Cup. In Dubai, Rohit won two games during the group stage, but he lost the first two Super 4 matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, respectively.
Currently, Rohit is aiming to break Kohli’s record for the most victories (across all formats) in a single year. While Rohit presently sits at 23 triumphs in 2022, Kohli currently holds the record with 31 victories in 2017 and 2019. With 24 victories in 1998, Mohammad Azharuddin ranks second best behind Virat Kohli. In 2002 and 2008, respectively, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni both enjoyed a 23-game winning streak.
He missed India’s final game against Afghanistan before returning during the Australia series. India took the series after dropping the opening game, winning the next two. And on Wednesday, Rohit earned his 16th T20I victory as Indian skipper with an eight-wicket victory in Thiruvananthapuram.
The previous holder of the record for the most T20I victories in a calendar year was MS Dhoni, who led India to 15 triumphs in 2016.
Apart from the T20 World Cup 2022, which starts next month, there are still plenty of games left in this year, so Rohit has a good chance of breaking Kohli’s record if India keep winning.
