Champions Trophy 2025: Marcus Stoinis, Australia’s top all-round player declaird his early retirement from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in advance of the competition. Stoinis, a vital element of Australia’s 15-man team and a consistent player in white-ball cricket for many years, has made the decision to switch to T20 cricket.
Stoinis most recent Australia ODI match against Pakistan, Stoinis scored eight runs while giving up eleven runs in three overs. Stoinis remarked on his ODI career after making his unexpected announcement, describing it as an amazing trip while playing for Australia. Stoinis added that during the Champions Trophy, he would be supporting the team from home.
“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish. This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support.” Stoinis said.
A Look at Marcus Stoinis’ ODI Career
Stoinis made his first appearance in an ODI match against England in September 2015, but it took him 16 months to play again, this time against New Zealand in January 2017. He put on an incredible all-around display in the game, taking 3/49 in 10 overs and hitting an undefeated 146. He was named Player of the Match for his efforts, but Australia lost despite his valiant attempts.
In 71 ODIs while playing for Australia, Stoinis has amassed 1,495 runs at an average of 31.27, with six half-centuries and one century. He has a career-best 3/16 record and 48 wickets with the ball. In the 2018–19 season, he was voted Australia’s ODI Cricketer of the Year and was a member of the winning 2023 ODI World Cup team.
After deciding on the team after the Test series against Sri Lanka, the selection panel will reveal Stoinis’ successor for the Champions Trophy.
