ISL 2024–25: Mohammedan SC concluded its inaugural Indian Super League (ISL) 2024–25 season on Monday by holding Punjab FC to a 2-2 draw at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.
After falling behind by two goals at one stage, the Kolkata-based squad came up with a strong second-half performance to secure the draw.
With 13 points from 24 games, the ISL rookie team concluded the season in bottom position on the points table despite never being able to win at home. With eight wins and four draws, Punjab FC amassed 28 points.
Ezequiel Vidal opened the goal in the ninth minute with an instinctive squared-up delivery from the visitor’s Asmir Suljic, who shown remarkable awareness to enter space on the left wing. Vidal then placed the delivery into the bottom left corner.
The second goal that Punjab FC scored in the 53rd minute was made possible in large part by Vidal. With a through pass meant for Luka Majcen at the edge of the 18-yard box, he broke through the Mohammedan defense.
Majcen jumped on the loose ball to put it in the bottom right corner and double his team’s lead after Zodingliana Ralte lost possession of the throw after attempting a fast interception.
However, Mohammedan took control of the game right on when Manvir Singh sent in a cutting cross from the left flank, with several teammates standing very close to the box to catch the delivery and head the ball in.
After a very packed scenario, Marc Schmerbock put the ball in the middle of the net with ease using his left foot, cutting the deficit to one goal. Vanlalzuidika Chhakchhuak then made a crucial block.
In the 83rd minute, Khaiminthang Lhungdim sent in a cross for Petros Giakoumakis to start Punjab FC’s push for the third goal. Ultimately, both clubs settled for a point apiece because the striker’s attempt lacked skill and was blocked in time.
