IPL 2025: Four Significant Rule Changes Revealed

The BCCI held a captains’ meeting in Mumbai and announced important rule revisions for the IPL 2025. Before the first game between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, here is all you need to know.

Saliva Prohibition Lifted

  • Players can once more spit on the ball.
  • Initially prohibited in 2020 because of COVID-19.
  • After captains agreed, a decision was reached.

The Second New Ball Rule

  • After 11 overs in the second innings, a second new ball will be added.
  • only to lessen the influence of dew during night games.
  • Not relevant to day games.
  • The umpires make the final decision.

Slow Over-Rate Does Not Lead to Match Bans

  • Captains who have slow over-rates won’t be banned.
  • Rather, they will be penalized with demerit points.
  • Level 1: demerit points plus a 25-75% match fee charge (good for 3 years).
  • Level 2: Four points for demerit.

Wides Expansion of DRS

  • Height wides can now be reviewed using DRS.
  • DRS can also be applied to off-stump wides.
