Australia and England’s 150th anniversary celebration Test match in 2027 will be the Melbourne Cricket Ground’s first men’s day-night match.
The first men’s Test match to be played under lights at the 100,000-seat stadium will be the 150th anniversary match, which will take place outside of Australia’s summer vacation time from March 11–15.
In addition to commemorating the first Test match between the bitter rivals Australia and England, which was played in Melbourne in 1877, the historic test will be the nation’s most recent home summer since the 1978–79 series against Pakistan.
“(It) will be one of the great cricket events and playing under lights will be a fantastic way to celebrate both our game’s rich heritage and Test cricket’s modern evolution,” Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg said in a statement.
For the next seven years, either the day or the day-night version of the December Christman Test will be held at the Adelaide Oval.
However, the upcoming Ashes Test at the location in 2025–2026 will be a day event.
This year’s five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy away from home will be followed by the celebration Test, which may also cause the English and Australian players to arrive rather late for the Indian Premier League (IPL), which may run from March 14 to May 30.
