AC Milan Advances to the Coppa Italia Final After Defeating Inter 3-0

AC Milan defeated city rivals Inter Milan 3-0 on Wednesday, securing a 4-1 aggregate victory to advance to the Coppa Italia final with a goal from Tijjani Reijnders and a double from Luka Jovic.

With Wednesday’s victory, Milan has won all five of this season’s local derbies, and Inter’s dreams of replicating the 2010 Serie A, Champions League, and Cup treble under Jose Mourinho were also dashed.

Sergio Conceicao’s team, now in ninth place in Serie A and most likely out of the Champions League next season, will probably play Bologna in the final in Rome next month.

With Bologna protecting a 3-0 advantage from the first meeting, the victory set up a matchup against either Bologna or Empoli, who play the second leg of their semi-final on Thursday.

Given a rare start, Jovic gave Milan the lead both on the evening and in the match when he thumped a header in the 38th minute to meet Alex Jimenez’s cross, the notional away team’s first opportunity of the match.

Prior to Jovic opening the score and the 27-year-old extending Milan’s aggregate lead three minutes after halftime, Federico Dimarco had struck the bar and Lautaro Martinez had hammered a fantastic chance over.

Four minutes after the restart, a corner found its way to the far post, where Jovic struggled to force it in, and the Serbian sent half of San Siro into raptures, doubling Milan’s advantage.

When Reijnders was released inside the box and scored Milan’s third goal from a sharp angle in the 85th minute, Inter’s humiliation was complete.

The final will take place at Stadio Olimpico on May 14.
