Carl Madsen, who served as an officer for the NFL for more than 20 years, died Sunday. He was 71 years old.
According to NFL.com, Madsen died on his way home from Sunday’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tennessee Titans, where he was working as a replay officer.
While details about Madsen’s death are unclear, the Nashville Police Department told TMZ that initial signs indicate that Madsen had to endure a “medical emergency” while driving on I-65 North. A spokesman said authorities responded to a call from a motorist blocking a traffic lane and Madsen was found unconscious at the scene.
According to reports, Madsen was administered chest pressure immediately after being removed from the vehicle, but eventually died after being taken to a nearby hospital. The exact cause of his death is still unclear.
Veteran in the Air Force, Madsen spent 12 years as an on-field officer from 1997 to 2008, and his replay changed to an official role. He was paired with Paul Wedner as the league’s most experienced replay officer.
