The cricket board of India has announced that Rohit Sharma, who won the ICC T20 World Cup to cap off his T20 international career, will captain the squad at the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
Following his captaincy of the Indian T20 team and the end of the cricket-mad country’s 13-year wait for an ICC Men’s World Cup trophy, Rohit will continue to lead the Test and ODI teams.
Rohit will captain the team in the 2025 Champions Trophy and World Test Championship (WTC) final, according to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.
“After this victory, the next stage is the 2025 WTC final and the Champions Trophy,” Shah said in a video message. “I am truly confident that we will win both the tournaments under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.”
Following their victory over South Africa in the Barbados final on June 29, Rohit, 37, Virat Kohli, 35, and Ravindra Jadeja, 35, declared their retirement from the Twenty20 league.
It was also Rahul Dravid’s final game as coach.
Shah complimented Dravid and the three seasoned players.
Shah stated, “This was our third final in the last year,” alluding to the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup.
The ODI Champions Trophy is slated to take place in Pakistan, India’s western neighbor and fiercest adversary in the sport, in February and March of 2025.
The highly anticipated match between Pakistan and India is slated to take place on March 1 in Lahore, an eastern metropolis just 24 kilometers (15 miles) from the Indian border.
The Indian government’s opinion would be taken into consideration when deciding whether to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.
When India last played in Pakistan, it was in Karachi, when it lost to Sri Lanka by 100 runs in the Asia Cup final.
However, when their government approved the tour, Pakistan visited India for the 50-over World Cup in late 2023, raising the remote prospect that India may follow suit for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
The WTC cycle will conclude with the final in London’s Lord’s in June 2025.
India has lost the Test championship final to Australia last year, after finishing second twice.
India also lost to Australia at home in the 2023 ODI World Cup final under Rohit’s leadership.
In 2021, he assumed leadership of the white-ball team, and a year later, he emerged as the all-format leader.
