July 7th, Paris India’s 29-year-old 3000m steeplechase runner Avinash Sable is off to a fantastic start in his training for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Clocking in at 8:09.91, he broke the National Record he achieved in the 2021 Commonwealth Games (8:11.20). Sable finished sixth in the elite Paris Diamond League.
Amos Serem of Kenya and Abraham Kibiwot of Kenya finished third and first, respectively, behind Ethiopia’s Abrham Sime.
Sable broke the national record in the steeplechase event at the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020, becoming the first Indian to do so since Gulzara Singh Mann in 1952. However, he was unable to advance to the finals on his first try. With the Games starting on July 26, his confidence and preparations appear to be on track.
Kishore Kumar Sena, the medal-hopeful Javelin thrower from India, competed today as well and placed eighth with a best throw of 78.10 meters.
Two new world records were set on Sunday, and records were broken everywhere in the Diamond League. The women’s 1500-meter world record was broken by Faith Kipyegon, who finished first in 3:49.04, breaking her own record of 3:49.11, and the women’s high jump record was set by Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine with a new best of 2.10 meters, surpassing the previous record held by Bulgaria’s Stefka Kostadinova (Rome Olympics 1987) by 1 centimeter.
