New York Yankees have agreed to a six-year, $162 million contract for left-handed starter Carlos Rodon.
After opting out of a contract with the San Francisco Giants at the conclusion of the previous season, Rodon, who is 30 years old, was the best pitcher still available. In 2022, he went 14-8 with a 2.88 ERA and pitched 178 innings in 31 starts, a career high. Additionally, he was named to his second consecutive All-Star team.
The Chicago White Sox selected Rodon with the third overall pick in the 2014 draft. However, Rodon suffered from injuries for the majority of his career before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He got back to his best in 2021, making 24 starts with a 2.37 earned run average, but the White Sox were careful with him at the end. In the final two months of the season, he never threw more than five innings.
Indeed, even with his prosperity that year, the White Sox non-offered Rodon that offseason, prompting a two-year manage the Goliaths. He exercised in November thanks to an opt-out option.
The Yankees’ rotation, which ranked fourth overall in ERA last year, now includes Rodon in addition to Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Luis Severino, and Frankie Montas, all of whom remain. The Yankees were knocked out of the postseason by the Houston Astros, so that ranking was not indicative of some problems in the second half.
The latest agreement for agent Scott Boras, who is once more enjoying a prosperous offseason, was first reported by the New York Post. Different arrangements for his clients incorporate Carlos Correa ($350 million), Xander Bogaerts ($280 million), Brandon Nimmo ($162 million), Masataka Yoshida ($90 million), Taijuan Walker ($72 million), Sean Manaea ($25 million) and Cody Bellinger ($17.5 million).
According to research conducted by ESPN Stats & Information, Rodon’s contract is the Yankees’ second-largest in terms of total value, trailing only Cole’s $324 million deal in 2019. In comparison to CC Sabathia’s 2008 Yankees contract worth $161 million, Rodon receives $1 million more.
This offseason, the Yankees have guaranteed $522 million in contracts between Rodon and Aaron Judge, who recently signed a nine-year, $360 million contract to stay with the team.
With a 3.60 ERA, Rodon has a 56-46 record in his career.
The Yankees will host San Francisco on Opening Day of the 2023 season, so he won’t have to wait long to face his former Giants team.
