The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vakeros women’s golf team is ranked 10th after the first day of the Barkat invitation on Monday at the Elkins Lake Country Club.
Vacqueros started the tournament with 308 in the first round and posted a second round of 618 after 310 in the second round. Vacqueros is currently UTEP, Stephen F. Austin is next to Bowling Green and Lamar.
Freshman Maria Jose Ramirez led the way for Vacqueros as she made two rounds of 150 while equalizing in 22nd place. Ramirez scored 74 runs in three overs before hitting 76 in the second over.
Julie Lucio, a junior and alumnus of Brownsville Veterans Memorial, is currently ranked 35th with two rounds of 154 after turning in the 76th and 78th rounds. And ..
Sophomore Samantha Garza is 54th with a two-round score of 161 after 81 and 80 rounds. Stroke 77 with second round.
Junior Blake Van Houten is 67th with a two-round score of 168 after opening the first round with 89 and then improving by 10 strokes with the second round 79.
On the first day host Sam Houston is leading with two rounds of 578 after 287 and 291 rounds. Sam Houston’s Julica Nasser and Avatar Word’s Ellen Nichols maintained their first-day lead with a two-round score of 139.
The Wakers will return for the final round of the Bearcat invitation on Tuesday, and the shotgun will begin at 8:30 p.m.
